Water Resources in a Changing Landscape

Centennial Hall Convention Center, 101 Egan Dr
Juneau, AK
February 25-27, 2019

The Alaska Section, AWRA is excited to announce the 2019 Annual Conference. AWRA's mission is to advance multidisciplinary water resources education, management and research. Our annual conference is an opportunity for collaboration among physical, biological, and social scientists, engineers, and other professionals concerned with water resource research, planning, development, management, and education. See the list of proposed sessions and topics below. The end of early registration and the deadline to submit abstracts for 15 min talk or a poster session is Friday, January 25th. Don't miss out on sharing your work with other water resources professionals and the chance to save $50 on the registration fee!

Proposed Sessions for 15 min talks or poster session:

  • Weather and water Extremes (including drought)
  • Water rights
  • Habitat (fish)
  • SE AK hydrography
  • Landslides
  • Geospatial data and modeling
  • Glacier dam outburst floods - workshop or session
  • Coastal hydrology/processes
  • Hazards
  • Applied, impacts, and social sciences
  • Other Related Topics

Rapid Talks: These are envisioned to be up to 5 minutes, 0-2 slides, and on topics of interest to our membership that aren't conducive to a full-length presentation. We are especially interested in folks with knowledge of Alaskan data resources (geospatial, sensor data, historical data, etc.) who can share what they use and where they find it, but other topics could include announcements of new working groups or meetings, projects in initial phases that are just too exciting to wait for full results, or a new toolbox, gadget, or method that doesn't require a 15 minute explanation. This is also a place for water resources show-and- tell, such as "check out this huge ice jam I saw last week". Or "this is what a failed rootwad revetment looks like". Please sign up via the abstract submission page, but note that you may sign up to give a rapid talk up to the conference date as long as space is available. Anyone can give a rapid talk, including those who are presenting in an oral or poster session.

Note to presenters: talks are 15 min with 5 min for questions. There will be a dedicated laptop computer with Microsoft PowerPoint installed for presentations. Please meet with your session moderator prior to your session in order to pre-load your presentation on the laptop. Look for a folder on the Desktop screen of the laptop labeled with the Session name and place your presentation in that folder. You will be able to load with either a USB stick or USB portable hard drive. Any special requirements should be discussed with your Moderator or in advance to awra.alaska@gmail.com.

Field Trip, Social Events: Eaglecreast Weather Station Ski Tour, Eaglecrest Ski Area Sunday Feb 24th, time TBD, please send email to awra.alaska@gmail.com if you would like to join us.

Student Travel Grant: Travel grants up to $500 are available to offset costs for student
presenters. Students applying for a 2019 travel grant must be traveling to the conference, and be presenting a poster or talk. Please e-mail the conference chair (awra.alaska@gmail.com) to be considered for a student travel grant.

Graduate Student Scholarships: The Alaska Section, American Water Resources Association, is pleased to announce its intent to award a scholarship for graduate-level research in the area of water-resources in Alaska. A scholarship of up to $2500 will be awarded on a competitive basis upon evaluation of research proposals submitted by current graduate students. Applications are due on Feb 25th 2019.
